Pitch Fibre Repairs
We can help you with all your Pitch Fibre problems.
Example of distorted pitch fibre pipe.
Pitch fibre is a notoriously unreliable drainage material which was in use extensively between the 1950s and 1970s. As the material that is wood, cellulose impregnated with inert coal tar pitch, it’s not really surprising that such pipes only have an average lifespan of around 40 years. This means that most pitch fibre pipework is now coming to the end of its intended lifespan which can lead to many problems.
Extensive problems can occur with pitch fibre drains including
- Internal blistering, caused by deterioration can cause blockages and eventually close up the entire pipeline.
- Pitch fibre is prone to deterioration caused by age, chemical erosion, weight stress and being poorly laid.
- Over time, pitch fibre becomes porous, washing away subsoil and causing subsidence. This also attracts shrub and tree roots, causing further damage.
- The delicate nature of pitch fibre means that the usual methods of drain clearance, e.g. high pressure jetting, can cause further structural damage.
We have been carrying out repairs to damaged pitch fibre for a number of years and have perfected our ‘no dig’ repair solution, which involves reshaping the deformed pipe. We deal with the problem by winching a ‘re-rounding cone’ through the damaged area. This restores the drain to its optimum shape. All of this can be done quickly and efficiently without the need for disruptive excavation. After the procedure has been carried out, the pipe is cleaned and checked with our CCTV camera and once we are happy with the re-profiling, a Cured-In-Place Pipe (CIPP), structural liner is installed to hold the pipe’s shape, stopping any future deformation of the pipe.
